Almost $150,000 for catered banquets. AIG spent $23,000 at the hotel spa and another $1,400 at the salon. They were getting manicures, facials, pedicures and massages while American people were footing the bill. And they spent another $10,000 dollars for I don’t know what this is, leisure dining. Bars?

Well, yet another one of those, it makes you think, huh?

Hope to see you tomorrow!

Working

Like most of us, I've been thinking a lot about the current economic crisis, the upcoming elections, and, in work in general.

On my way almost anywhere from my home/Three Stone Steps worldwide headquarters here in Southeast Baltimore, Maryland, USA, I see men--almost always men--and almost always Latino--waiting around near the 7-11 and a few other corners hoping, just hoping, that someone will pick them up for a day's work, mostly on a construction site.

But, given the economic crisis, many more people are thrown out of work. This brilliant video imagines what happens when Wall Street types get really desperate:

Now, that was imagined, but here, White House spokesperson Dana Perino takes it a step further. It seems that the way to solve the unemployment crisis in this country is for people to get jobs.

Maybe there's something I'm missing here, but isn't the reason people are unemployed is because they don't have jobs. It's times like this, that I'm so delighted to be out and about meeting people and selling ethical accessories.

How about you?

Fells Point Festival this Weekend!

One of the biggest festivals in the Baltimore area, the Fells Point Fun Festival, is happening this weekend. (Look for Three Stone Steps on Thames, between B'dwy and Bond--and not too far from the beer garden!)

There will be festival specials, so if you're in the area, and have had your eye on some eco-chic, repurposed bags, it'll be a great time to buy! Also, don't forget about great messenger bags in cotton, and shoulder bags in silk, as well as wallets, business card cases, and beautiful hand loomed silk scarves. Now, that was, to me and other women I know, just about the most cynical thing I can think of. I really can't add any more to the debate over this person than has already been out there.

So, not only was the pick of this governor from a non-contiguous state the very definition of cynicism, but I came upon this in the New York Times last week:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/01/business/worldbusiness/01vogue.html

Here's the opening few paragraphs:

NEW DELHI — An old woman missing her upper front teeth holds a child in rumpled clothes — who is wearing a Fendi bib (retail price, about $100).

A family of three squeezes onto a motorbike for their daily commute, the mother riding without a helmet and sidesaddle in the traditional Indian way — except that she has a Hermès Birkin bag (usually more than $10,000, if you can find one) prominently displayed on her wrist.

Elsewhere, a toothless barefoot man holds a Burberry umbrella (about $200).

Welcome to the new India — at least as Vogue sees it.

Vogue India’s August issue presented a 16-page vision of supple handbags, bejeweled clutches and status-symbol umbrellas, modeled not by runway stars or the wealthiest fraction of Indian society who can actually afford these accessories, but by average Indian people.

So, here we have a baby used as a prop (where have we seen this before?) wearing a $100 bib. I really don't know anyone who would spend this money for this sort of thing, and I live in a developed country. Who knows why Indian Vogue did this. A subtle wink wink, elbow to the ribs for the viewer that people are still in poverty, but getting a job in a developed nation making luxury goods will move one out of poverty? Who is this supposed to appeal to? Do the Indian nouveau riche want to show off their kid's bib by saying, yeah, how clever, the bib was in a shoot with India's poor?

I've not been to India, but I've been to plenty of developing countries in Asia. I can't pretend to know what goes on in the minds of the editors of Vogue, but exploiting poor people to sell luxury goods is just, well, cynical. In Chinese lore, this symbolizes a promise that those who walk the stairs will have “solid footing for a good journey,” she says. Reich’s online store, Three Stone Steps (www.threestonesteps.com), which launched in late 2007, aims to capture this sentiment. The store carries bags, scarves, and accessories made by a group of artisans in Penampang, Cambodia. Reich bills the goods as fair-trade and eco-friendly, and works with the designers to create original accessories with hometown appeal. The printed silk “Little Bit of Everything” bag is a perfect cosmetics case. The durable messenger bags—such as Reich’s personal favorite, the Mingus bag, made out of woven recycled garbage bags—are handy for carrying everything from school books to laptops. Items are available online and at select Baltimore businesses and festivals listed on the website.

—Hannah M. There were representatives from big organizations, like the Department of Labor Women's Bureau and departments within the World Bank, the executive director of the Fair Trade Federation, and small importers like me.

I learned a new phrase that I'll now use often, I'm sure: pity purchases or what I call the buy this bag or I'll kill this puppy school of selling. I know that I could sell many more bags if I told you that many are made by polio and landmine victims, and artisans with HIV. But, a bag is about its function and its design. The fact that it helps a worker in a developing part of the world is value added. I've often joked that I would be rich, rich I tell you, if I told some story that buying one of our bags helped a teenage amputee mother with AIDS in a country that recently had a genocide escape from sexual slavery, but that's not what I think it's about. I respect the customer and the producers far too much to engage in selling based on emotional blackmail.

I also learned that 70 percent of workers in the fair trade sector are women. So, the thought that you either think of women's issues or you think of general fair trade issues isn't much of a point, since they are almost one in the same.

As the chief executive of everything here at the worldwide headquarters of Three Stone Steps, I don't get a lot of chances to sit back, and actually assess just where a little fair trade import company like mine fits within the great big world of social justice. Yes, I do get to think about this on those long flights to S.E. Asia---but, in my day to day work, it's actually a wonderfully compelling luxury.

My morning at the National Museum of Women in the Arts presented just this sort of intellectually stimulating mini-holiday, and that alone should keep me inspired for days and weeks to come.

Three Stone Steps at Great Green Goods

The deservingly popular--if I do say so myself!--Fellini Pannolini Bag was recently featured on Great Green Goods, a fantastic site that manages to unearth some fantastic products. Although selling imports may not seem very eco-friendly chief executive, Ellen Reich is committed to minimizing each trip when possible and using recycled materials in the work place. Reich doesn’t just look to ‘fair trade’ and being "green" as devices for clever marketing. Having worked in the U.S. labor movement for 15 years, and holding a masters degree in Labor Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, she is keenly aware of the issues involved with justice in the workplace.
Read their press release……

For immediate release

July 7, 2008, Baltimore, Maryland: Baltimore-based importer, Three Stone Steps, is pleased to announce its new partnership with a producer group in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

This partnership represents globalization at its best: Three Stone Steps has brought U.S. style and sensibilities to the Cambodian workshop’s Italian designers, to be made by Cambodian master tailors.

Functional, durable, funky, and sustainable, these bags are made from repurposed mosquito netting, and lined with repurposed waterproof industrial tarp. One style is made from post-consumer waste black plastic garbage bags, which have been collected by mothers in Cambodia struggling to make a modest living, and then washed and dried in the sun. They are then bought at market value, and woven into a unique cross-body bag.

These bags are offered online at www.threestonesteps.com as well as at select boutiques here in Baltimore, and from Alaska to Washington, both the state and the District, a bit further afield.

Ellen Reich, owner of Three Stone Steps, states: "People see these bags and really like them. Then they learn that they are both sustainable and fairly made, and they love them. It’s important to me that the appeal of these bags is on their design, and not, initially, on how and by whom they are produced. The only way that we’ll move, as a society, into being more conscientious about what we are consuming is to sell things that people actually adore and want to use."

About Three Stone Steps:

Ellen Reich, founder of Three Stone Steps, began the business in late 2006 as a way to share the great products she found while traveling with a larger audience. As a former labor union activist who holds a masters degree in Labor Studies, she felt strongly that all items should be made under standards that adhere or surpass fair trade standards. Ellen is also strongly committed to environmental issues. She was certain that there was a way to combine great products, and a green sensibility with a commitment to fair trade. She did, and Three Stone Steps was born.

The name "three stone steps" comes from Chinese lore, where three stone steps at the foot of wooden staircase promises solid footing for a good journey.

Three Stone Steps in the Baltimore Examiner & The Scarf

Ok, while anorexic fashion models aren't quite Three Stone Steps' thing (ok, Venus, our tall, thin mannequin model is an exception), I was delighted with this little write up in the Baltimore Examiner's online edition last week.

And, delighted, too, that scarves were the featured fashion accessory. Really, I have seen fashionistas here and there, even in the heat and humidity of the Baltimore summer, wearing scarves. And, I must admit, that Three Stone Steps just received some great new hand loomed 100 percent Cambodian silk scarves. As with everything else, I'm still busy getting them up on the site, but honestly, these scarves are so beautiful and luminous and just so tactile that it helps to see them in person.

I'll have the colors on photos updated on the site by next week, but if you're in need of a scarf right this minute, please contact us.

http://www.examiner.com/x-403-Baltimore-Fashion-Examiner~y2008m7d2-It-Takes-Just-3-Stone-Steps-to-Look-Effortlessly-Chic

It Takes Just 3 Stone Steps to Look Effortlessly Chic!
POSTED July 2, 10:31 AM

One trend I really, really love right now is accessorizing an outfit with a colorful, thick scarf. I spent the day before Mother's (or Mothers' Day) being muddy, wet, and cold at Cylburn Arboretum's Market Day. It's a lovely event, however the weather did not cooperate. At least I did not get sun stroke.

This weekend was absolutely gorgeous, and spent it in Rockville, Maryland. (Yes, it's the same Rockville, at least according to wikipedia, as in that R.E.M. song (Don't Go Back to) Rockville. And, now try getting that out of your head.

I was a vendor in the little, new Green Expo section of the city's Hometown Holidays, which marked its 20th year this weekend. Loads of people, loads of dogs, loads of food and music. As usual, I had fantastic neighbors, including Community Forklift, best described as a cross between Home Depot and Goodwill.

As always, I met some really fantastic Rockvillians and some other Montgomery County denizens. And, sold a few bags and scarves, which never, ever hurts. I certainly hope that the new Green Expo isn't a one-time deal, since I look forward to being there next year. Perhaps you'll be able to join me.

And, now for a massive change in subject:

I want to introduce you to Venus. Once you see my new employee (she is signing up for Mannequins and Inanimate Models local 6332 any day now!) who will model Three Stone Steps' bags. For those of you who cannot join me at live events, or get to one of Three Stone Steps' many fine retailers, Venus should assist you with getting a good sense of bag sizes and styles.

Here we go:

<----Venus (ok, I know the name is a bit too obvious) is modeling the Fellini Pannolini Bag. While Venus is about six feet tall and a size 2 (don't get jealous, she doesn't have any hair or arms, so there!) so keep that in mind when figuring out how the bag would look on a more normally sized person.

On this side------------------------------------------>
Venus is showing off the Mingus Flat Cross Body Bag.
You can see just how stylin' she is in this, and you can be stylin' too.

Again, these bags should be up and on the Three Stone Steps site in the next few weeks. They will also be at retailers from Alaska to Washington (the state and ournationscapital) in the next few weeks as well.

In the meantime, I will be spending this coming weekend at the Charles Village Festival in Baltimore. And, I'm giving Venus the day off. Where would we be without it?

In my never ending quest to blog about holidays, I found Mothers' Day (with the apostrophe after the "s" ) to be much more to my liking. It's a communal thing: you know, collective action versus taking your mother out to brunch with free flowing mimosas and signing your name to a Hallmark card.

As with most things, there's some great background here, background that those marking Mother's Day eating out and shopping tend to forget. This first little bit is minimally edited from a website on West Virginia culture:

It started with Ann Marie Jarvis who organized a series of Mothers' Day Work Clubs in West Virginia to improve health and sanitary conditions. Among other services, the clubs raised money for medicine, hired women to work for families in which the mothers suffered from tuberculosis, and inspected bottled milk and food. In 1860, local doctors supported the formation of clubs in other towns.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad made a county in West Virginia a strategic site during the Civil War. Ann Jarvis urged the Mothers' Day Work Clubs to declare their neutrality and provide relief to both Union and Confederate soldiers. The clubs treated the wounded and regularly fed and clothed soldiers stationed in the area. Jarvis also managed to preserve an element of peace in a community being torn apart by political differences. During the war, she worked tirelessly despite the personal tragedy of losing four of her children to disease. In all, eight of her twelve children died before reaching adulthood.
But, that's not all. Julia Ward Howell, of Battle Hymn of the Republic fame, as well as an advocate for suffrage and a pacifist also envision Mothers' Day as an "s" apostrophe holiday. In fact, she wrote a poetic proclamation:

Arise then...women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!

Say firmly:
"We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
                                 For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."
From the bosom of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."
Blood does not wipe out dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil
At the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace...
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God -
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.
How the holiday morphed from one promoting the great and general interests of peace to one promoting (unfairly traded) floral bouquets and canned sentiment is far beyond the scope of this blog, and perhaps my somewhat rusty research skills. But, with that said, Happy Mothers' Day to all!

Earth Week in Baltimore

What a great scene right in front of my little Three Stone Steps space at the Eco Festival that kicked off baltimoregreenweek. All morning long, there were groups of kids drawing with chalk on the asphalt. While many kids came through during the day, this little group above came first.

Really, whenever I do one of those early spring festivals at the home of Three Stone Steps' worldwide headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, I'm always delighted.

In this case, I was incredibly amazed at all the positive things that people are taking on to make the city, state, country, and planet a better place to live now and into the future. Also, getting out with my eco-chic bags, silk scarves, and business card cases and getting feed back is always great. And, let's be honest, a sale or two never actually hurt either.

I also had fantastic neighbors. Reps from a new magazine, City Living Source, on one side, and the delightful Sharan, who's taken it upon herself to put together Baltimore's first Fashion Week on my other side. In fact, I was so impressed with both that I'll probably do some sort of ad thing in the magazine around the winter holidays, and am seriously thinking of taking my eco-chic bags to the runway for Fashion Week. Ok, it's not Milan, or London, or New York, but it's sure to be fun and new (for me).

I'll keep you all posted on my first foray into the world of the catwalk.

But, before I get there, I'll again be at a Springtime in Baltimore event at the Cylburn Arboretum on May 10. As always, I'll keep you posted!
